Go London is a shared movement led by the NHS with key partners including the GLA to create a city where physical activity is a normal part of Londoners’ lives and contributes to making London a more liveable, sustainable and healthy city.
Go London is a movement to maximise the potential from the 2012 Games to generate an increase in the number of Londoners participating in physical activity and enjoying better health and wellbeing.
Britain’s bid for the Games was clear in its intent to deliver health benefits as part of the legacy from the 2012 Games.
Hosting the Games provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive up activity participation among Londoners – a challenge that no previous host city has yet achieved.
NHS London published the Go London strategy in Summer 2009. To download the strategy please click here.
What are the benefits of being physically active?
There is now strong and widely shared evidence that physical inactivity ranks alongside obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and lipids, and cigarette smoking as a risk factor for the epidemics of the 21st Century such as cancer, cardio vascular disease and heart disease.
Where physical inactivity is different from the other risk factors is that by becoming more active, the risks of heart disease, stroke and some cancers are reduced, and it also has a multiplier effect:
Physical activity:
reduces blood pressure, blood lipids, blood sugar
reduces obesity
has both a direct and indirect impact on emotional well being
Being physically active helps London become a more sustainable city and is also just good fun!
